Atollscape Design Unit @ FEST MNU – 2021
Faced with the requirements of the Architectural Design syllabus, Atollscape’s approach for the studio was to critique the standard design of the curriculum by encouraging students to deconstruct the process in order to redefine and contextualise the imposed ideas related to the generic of mainstreamed “climate resilience”. In the context of the unprecedented global pandemic, students were prompted to challenge established ideas of resilience, which were largely shaped by the 2004 tsunami. The focus shifted towards questioning these conventional frameworks and exploring a more localized understanding of resilience, especially in light of the latest observations and forecasts from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) regarding climate change. This process urged students to redefine resilience within the specific environmental and cultural context of the Maldives.
